The communications service is scheduled to be rolled out as part of Yahoo Go 3.0 and Yahoo’s new mobile home page in the second quarter of this year.

Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) on Tuesday introduced a new service called oneConnect, which will combine e-mail, instant messaging, text messaging, and social networking in one mobile platform.



The company plans to roll out oneConnect as part of Yahoo Go 3.0 — an all-in-one mobile offering — and Yahoo’s new mobile home page in the second quarter of this year. In the meantime, Yahoo is showcasing oneConnect at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona this week.



One of the more impressive features of oneConnect is a socially-connected address book, which will allow users to transfer activities from social networks, professional networks, and communities to their address book. For example, users will be able to stay on top of when a contact updates their status or uploads a photo to their profile.



Yahoo will also offer integrated mobile messaging. That means any messaging service provider will be able to use Yahoo’s application program interfaces to integrate with oneConnect’s messaging feature, according to the company. Yahoo said it will use an open communications platform to give users the freedom to send e-mail, instant messages, text messages, and access social networks through a single application.



Users may potentially be able to access both their personal and work messaging services. Yahoo also said it’s in discussions with DataViz, which specializes in mobile access to Microsoft Exchange e-mail accounts and Microsoft Office documents. The two would team up to develop widget versions of DataViz’s RoadSynch and Documents To Go applications.



Other features in oneConnect include the ability to set up messaging shortcuts to get in touch with people more quickly; a social contact card for collecting relevant information about contacts; and a location-sensing capability for locating, chatting, and exchanging information with nearby oneConnect users.



Yahoo expects oneConnect to support hundreds of mobile devices and mobile browsers worldwide.

 

Yahoo’s board plans to reject Microsoft’s $44.6 billion hostile bid in a letter on Monday, saying the offer undervalues Yahoo, people involved in the discussions said Saturday.

Microsoft, which hopes Yahoo will help it compete more effectively against Google, is likely to continue its pursuit.

The decision to reject the offer was made after a board meeting Friday in which directors discussed ways the company might respond to Microsoft’s week-old bid. The board heard presentations from Yahoo’s management and its bankers, who made the case that the company was worth more than the $31 a share Microsoft offered, people familiar with the discussions said.

In response, Microsoft is likely to mount a behind-the-scenes campaign directed at Yahoo’s largest shareholders, hoping they will put pressure on Yahoo’s board, people familiar with Microsoft’s plans said. Hedge funds have bought up much of Yahoo’s stock since Microsoft made its bid, and they typically favor a quick sale as opposed to holding shares for the long term.

Microsoft could also decide to make an offer directly to shareholders, called a tender offer, which would put even more pressure on Yahoo’s board to negotiate. Microsoft could also set a deadline for its offer.

Microsoft has already intimated that it could seek to oust Yahoo’s board at its next election; it would have until March 13 to nominate a new slate of directors. Unlike other corporations, Yahoo has no protections to prevent an overthrow of its board.

Microsoft could also raise its offer to Yahoo’s board. It had planned to bid as much as $35 a share before Yahoo’s shares dropped to a three-year low last week, when it reported disappointing earnings.

Yahoo and Microsoft declined to comment Saturday. Yahoo said earlier in the week that its board was evaluating Microsoft’s offer and other options. The board’s decision to reject the bid was first reported on the Web site of The Wall Street Journal on Saturday.

Some analysts said Yahoo’s rejection might simply be an attempt to get Microsoft to raise its bid.

At the Friday meeting, the Yahoo board also discussed options for maintaining the company’s independence, including an advertising partnership with Google that could improve Yahoo’s financial strength, people familiar with the discussions said.

Legal analysts said the board’s deliberations were complicated by the fact that both of its most talked-about options could face antitrust objections. Google has already raised potential antitrust issues about a Microsoft-Yahoo tie-up. A Google-Yahoo partnership in search advertising could have “even bigger antitrust implications,” said Carl W. Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

“It is a bit of a game and a gamble,” Mr. Tobias said. “Certainly a possibility is that the Google deal is being put forward to press Microsoft into offering more per share.”

No other offers to acquire Yahoo have surfaced, according to people familiar with the situation.

“They don’t have a whole lot of choices and a lot of defenses,” said Scott C. Dettmer, a veteran adviser to technology companies in Silicon Valley and a founding partner of the law firm Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian.

Some analysts also noted that Microsoft’s initial offer, a mix of cash and stock, had already dropped in value as its shares have declined. It is worth about $29 a share based on Friday’s close.

Filmul românesc „O zi bună de plajă” de Bogdan Mustaţă a primit marţi cel mai important premiu pentru scurtmetraj al celei de-a 58-a ediţii a Festivalului de Film de la Berlin, Ursul de Aur, potrivit site-ului oficial al evenimentului.

Filmul de 10 minute, realizat după un scenariu de Cătălin Mitulescu, îi are în centru pe trei puşti delincvenţi care sechestrează un şofer de dubă şi o prostituată şi-i duc pe o plajă.

Actorii au fost luaţi dintr-o închisoare de minori şi din centre de plasament din Bucureşti. Preproducţia a început în martie 2007, iar filmările au avut loc în iunie, pe litoral, şi au durat cinci zile.

Scenariul a fost respins la concursul de proiecte cinematografice organizat de Centrul Naţional al Cinematografiei în 2005, dar a primit finanţare în sesiunea din 2006.

Juriul competiţiei de scurtmetraje de la Berlinală, din care fac parte producătoarea Ada Solomon din România, actorul şi regizorul francez Marc Barbé şi tânăra actriţă germană Laura Tonke, au ales filmul lui Mustaţă din 11 care au concurat pentru Ursul de Aur şi Ursul de Argint, alese la rândul lor din 29 de scurtmetraje înscrise în festival. Printre cele 29 s-a numărat şi un alt film românesc, „Târziu” de Paul Negoescu, care nu a fost însă eligibil pentru premiu.

„O zi bună de plajă ridică mai degrabă probleme decât să aducă soluţii, într-un mod foarte precis şi impredictibil”, se arată în motivaţia juriului festivalului. „Considerăm că este una dintre cele mai preţioase calităţi ca un film să rămână cu tine şi după ce genericul s-a sfârşit.”

Ursul de Argint a fost acordat scurtmetrajului „Udedh bun” al regizorului indian Siddharth Sinha, premiul UIP a revenit peliculei „Frankie” de Darren Thornton din Irlanda iar DAAD Short Film Prize, filmului „B teme” de Olga Popova din Rusia.

Juriul a mai acordat două menţiuni soeciale, pentru „Superfície” de Rui Xavier şi scurtmetrajul de animaţie „RGB XYZ” de David OReilly.

Numarul utilizatorilor Grupului Cosmote, activ in cinci tari din Sud-Estul Europei, respectiv Grecia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania si Fosta Republica Iugoslava a Macedoniei (FYROM), a depasit anul trecut pragul de 15,5 milioane de utilizatori, tinta fixata initial pentru 2009, a anuntat miercuri compania. Pe piata din Romania, Cosmote are trei milioane de utilizatori.

Pe piata din Romania, Cosmote este al treilea operator de telefonie mobila, dupa Orange si Vodafone, cu trei milioane de clienti, la finele lunii octombrie a anului trecut. Compania este parte a grupului elen de telefonie mobila Cosmote, controlata de grupul elen OTE. Romtelecom controleaza 30% din actiunile Cosmote Romania, restul actiunilor fiind detinute de compania elena Cosmote. Grupul OTE detine 54,01% din capitalul social al Romtelecom, restul actiunilor fiind controlate de statul roman.
